Trapped in Septic Tank

Tragedy struck at Dumanjug Public Market in Cebu on Tuesday morning, June 18, 2024, as a plumber/welder was trapped and lost his life while working inside a septic tank. His companion was also affected by the fumes but survived. Here are some details according to the report of SunStar Philippines.

Details of the Incident

The deceased was identified as Mark Gil Alberca Eniego, 28 years old, married, and a resident of Barangay Kanguha, Dumanjug. He was working alongside Jerome Merenillo at the market’s septic tank.

Fellow workers Eddie Marie Rellorta Aranda and Jureme Saberon Amit attempted to rescue Eniego and Merenillo but were hindered by the noxious fumes inside the tank. They struggled with breathing difficulties as well.

Rescuers utilized blowers for ventilation to aid in retrieving the affected individuals from the tank.

Medical Response

Eniego and Merenillo were rushed to Barili District Hospital in an ambulance. Unfortunately, Eniego was pronounced dead upon arrival due to acute respiratory distress secondary to toxic inhalation injury, as determined by Dr. Johanna Louise de Leon.

The incident of the two welders trapped underscores the dangers faced by workers in hazardous environments such as septic tank. This highlights the importance of safety protocols and swift emergency response measures.
