Truck Runs Over Senior Citizen on Cebu City Freeway

Truck Runs Over Senior Citizen

A tragic accident occurred at the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City when a 10-wheel truck runs over a senior citizen crossing the freeway, resulting in her instant death. The incident took place at around 10 a.m. on May 5, 2024. Here are some details according to the report of GMA Regional TV News.

Details of the Incident

The victim, identified through her ID cards as Consolacion Rosal, a 65-year-old resident of Mandaue City, was crossing a bridge at the SRP when the truck struck her. According to an investigation by the Cebu City Police Office – Traffic Enforcement Unit (CCPO – TEU), the truck was heading toward the Municipality of Minglanilla, traveling on the Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR). The accident occurred as the truck was ascending the bridge on the Cebu City side of the SRP.

The truck driver, Gregorio Geoco, stated that it was too late for him to stop the truck due to its heavy load, which made it challenging to halt the vehicle in time to avoid the collision.

The TEU is investigating why the senior citizen was crossing an area not designated for pedestrians. It is unclear whether there were any warning signs or barriers to prevent crossing at that point. The truck driver is currently in TEU custody, and he faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide for his role in the accident.

Another Accident in Talisay City

In a separate incident, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) overturned at the CSCR in Barangay San Isidro, Talisay City, at around 3 a.m. on May 4, 2024. According to City of Talisay – Traffic Operations and Development Authority Head Jonathan Tumulak, the vehicle was traveling in the outer lane toward South Cebu when it hit a gutter and tipped over.

The driver was reportedly using her cellphone while driving, which led to the accident. Fortunately, no one was hurt in this incident, and the two women on board the vehicle escaped unscathed.

These incidents highlight the dangers of inattentive driving and the risks of crossing areas not designated for pedestrians. The CCPO and TEU are investigating the causes of the accidents and reminding the public to exercise caution on the road. Pedestrians and motorists must adhere to traffic regulations and avoid distractions while driving to prevent such tragic events in the future.
