Overall Winners Announced

Henri Schoeman from South Africa and Ells Visser from The Netherlands emerged as the overall champions of the event. Schoeman completed the course in an impressive time of four hours and two minutes, while Visser clocked in at four hours and 21 minutes.

Schoeman, reflecting on his victory, mentioned the scorching heat and his strategy to maintain composure throughout the race. “It was hot, but I tried to keep my cool. I just tried to keep my rhythm. I’m really happy I won today,” he said. He also praised the support from the spectators, especially during the cycling segment over the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX), which offered stunning views.

Visser shared her journey to success, emphasizing the hard work and persistence required to compete at this level. “I’ve been working so hard with a lot of obstacles. I had some setbacks, but really, if you’ve been working hard, keep believing in yourself, and one day you will succeed,” she encouraged.

Local Talent Shines

Among the local athletes who participated in the event was Cebu’s own Matteo Guidicelli. Competing in the swimming and cycling portions of the triathlon, Guidicelli highlighted the importance of crowd support and the unique atmosphere in Cebu. “The swim in Cebu is one of the best in the world,” he noted. “The hydration stations are crucial, but the cheers from the Cebuanos are the most important for motivating the athletes.”

The Ironman 70.3 course took athletes through various locations in Cebu, starting in Lapu-Lapu City, heading to the neighboring town of Cordova, then crossing to the mainland via the CCLEX, and back to Lapu-Lapu City. This event marked the 10th time that Lapu-Lapu City has hosted the Ironman 70.3 race, underscoring the city’s significant role in promoting athletic events and tourism.

With such a successful turnout and outstanding performances from the athletes, the Ironman 70.3 event continues to be a major highlight in Cebu’s sports calendar, attracting competitors from across the globe.
