Woman Apprehended in Cebu City for Cyber Extortion Involving Explicit Content

An entrapment operation orchestrated by the Regional Anti-Cyber Crime Unit in Central Visayas (RACU 7) led to the arrest of an 18-year-old woman, Dorothy Aliñabon. The operation took place on January 12, 2024. It is around 3:10 p.m. in Sitio San Roque Kawayan, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City.

From the Facebook post of SunStar Cebu, the arrest followed a complaint filed by Kathryn, a 19-year-old second-year college student from Barangay Labangon, Cebu City. Kathryn reported receiving threats via a messenger account from someone named “Dorothy Taborada.” The threats indicated that if she didn’t provide a sum of P500, explicit photos and sex videos involving Kathryn and her live-in partner would be post on social media.

According to Patrolwoman Lilibeth Jocson, an investigator of RACU 7, the victim had sought assistance after enduring four months of threatening remarks from Dorothy. The suspect consistently demanded varying amounts of money, escalating to the final demand of P500 through chat messages. Failure to comply would result in the release of compromising images and videos.

During the entrapment operation, Kathryn, with the assistance of law enforcement. Prepared to hand over the specified amount. Authorities intervened at the crucial moment, leading to Dorothy Aliñabon’s apprehension.

Despite the suspect’s pleas for forgiveness, Kathryn had already filed charges against her. The charges include violations of Article 294 of the Revised Penal Code for Robbery Extortion and Republic Act 9995. Known as the Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act.

Investigator Jocson revealed that the incident was driven by envy, with Aliñabon discovering explicit content involving Kathryn on her live-in partner’s messenger account. As legal proceedings unfold, this case sheds light on the prevalence of cyber extortion. As well as the efforts to combat such crimes in the digital landscape.
