PISTON Set for April 29-May 1 Transport Strike Over PUV Modernization

PUV Modernization

Transport group Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) is set for a 3-day transport strike from April 29 to May 1 to protest the government’s franchise consolidation deadline and the public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program. Here are some details from the report of The Philippine Star.

Labor Day Strike Protests PUV Reforms

The strike, planned to coincide with Labor Day celebrations, is in response to the government’s push for franchise consolidation and PUV modernization. According to PISTON Deputy Secretary General Ruben Baylon, these changes place undue burden on jeepney drivers and operators. PISTON’s April 15 transport strike followed a 2-day strike by MANIBEL

The strike is expected to affect key routes. This includes Alabang, Baclaran, Sucat, Taft Avenue, Agoncillo, Monumento, Novaliches, Litex, Anonas, Katipunan, and Philcoa. Baylon stated that the strike is a fight to secure the livelihood of those in the transportation sector.

Baylon emphasized that PISTON opposes forced franchise consolidation, which they view as detrimental to the well-being of jeepney drivers and operators. He insists that public service is a fundamental right. This is despite threats of arrests and other consequences for operating beyond the April 30 franchise consolidation deadline. He asserts that PISTON members won’t back down.

Government’s Support

Labor group Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) has expressed support for the transport strike. They plan to join the march from the University of Santo Tomas to the US Embassy on Roxas Boulevard on May 1.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. previously declared that there would be no extension to the franchise consolidation deadline. He emphasized that this step is crucial for the country’s progress and development.
