Teves Arrested

Former congressman Teves, facing charges for the killing of a political rival in 2023, was arrested while playing golf in Timor Leste, announced the Department of Justice (DOJ). His arrest marks a significant milestone in international cooperation against terrorism and underscores the commitment to upholding justice and security. Here are some details according to Cebu Daily News.

Arrest Details

Teves, labeled a “designated terrorist” and expelled lawmaker, captured in the capital Dili while engaged in a golf game at the Top Golf Driving Range and Bar. According to DOJ statements, East Timorese police promptly placed him under custody pending extradition to the Philippines.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla lauded the apprehension as a triumph of international cooperation in combating terrorism. He emphasized that Teves’s capture underscores the global commitment to thwarting terrorism and preserving peace. Remulla extended gratitude to the East Timorese police and Interpol for their collaboration in ensuring justice prevails.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Teves faces multiple charges, including murder, frustrated murder, and attempted murder, stemming from the killing of then Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo and nine others in March 2023. Interpol issued a red notice, prompting authorities to actively search for Teves, who reportedly hid in Timor-Leste after his asylum bid was rejected.

Teves’s legal saga extends beyond the assassination charges, encompassing accusations of involvement in previous killings and violations of gun-control laws. His expulsion from the House of Representatives and the subsequent cancellation of his passport highlight the severity of his legal predicament.

Extradition Process

The DOJ expressed gratitude to law enforcement agencies for their relentless pursuit of justice.
Efforts are underway to facilitate Teves’s extradition. Interpol’s Dili bureau is collaborating closely with counterparts in Manila and the Philippine Embassy in Dili.

Teves’s arrest sends a clear message that individuals evading justice will be hold accountable, irrespective of their location. The collaborative efforts of international law enforcement agencies underscore the determination to combat terrorism and uphold the rule of law. As legal proceedings unfold, Teves’s apprehension represents a significant victory in the fight against lawlessness and terrorism.
