BOC Seizes P158.7 Million Worth of Kush from Balikbayan Boxes

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has successfully intercepted a significant smuggling attempt, seizing 132.3 kilograms of dried kush with an estimated value of P158.7 million concealed in six balikbayan boxes originating from Thailand, revealed a BOC official on Monday. Here are some details according to The Philippine Star.

Confiscation Details

BOC Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio disclosed in a statement that the intercepted kush, recognized as a type of high-grade marijuana, was purportedly consigned to Mary Gail Quesada and Rainier Quesada through the Marcelo Laylo Cargo Forwarders.

According to Rubio, the consignees, as well as the senders and recipients of the six balikbayan boxes, are now subject to criminal charges for violating various sections of Philippine laws. These charges include Section 118 (prohibited importation and exportation), Section 1400 (misdeclaration), and Section 1113 (property subject to seizure and forfeiture) of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, alongside Republic Act 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002).

Interception Process

The BOC’s Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) uncovered the packs of kush during a physical examination of the balikbayan boxes at the Manila International Container Port on March 18. Director Verne Enciso of BOC-CIIS revealed that their office received a tip regarding the consolidated shipment, prompting them to request the issuance of an alert order on February 28.

The BOC has since forwarded confirmatory samples to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) for further analysis. Meanwhile, the authorities have securely returned all six balikbayan boxes to the shipping container for safekeeping.

This successful interception underscores the BOC’s commitment to curbing illegal activities and safeguarding the country against the entry of prohibited substances. The collaboration between BOC and other relevant agencies serves as a testament to the government’s unwavering dedication to upholding law and order, ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
