12 BIFF-Karialan Leaders Killed in Maguindanao Operation

BIFF-Karialan Leaders Killed

A significant military operation in Barangay Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao del Sur, on Monday, April 22, 2024, killed two alleged high-ranking leaders of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters-Karialan Faction (BIFF-KF) and ten other members.

The military confirmed that Mohiden Animbang, the chairman of the BIFF-KF, and his brother, Saga Animbang, the group’s operations chief, were among those killed during the intense gunfight. Here are some details from the report of GMA Regional TV News.

Military Operation and Casualties

The gunfight began at around 7:30 a.m., involving troops from multiple units, including the 1st Brigade Combat Team (1BCT), the 1st Scout Ranger Company of the 1st Scout Ranger Battalion, and the Scout Platoon of CAT 92 and 99. The military engaged with at least 15 BIFF-KF fighters during the operation, seizing a significant cache of firearms. Among the weapons confiscated were five M16A1 rifles, three M14 rifles, two M653 rifles, an M4 rifle, and another high-powered gun.

Authorities are still in the process of identifying the other ten BIFF-KF members killed during the operation.

Refusal to Surrender

Major General Alex Rillera, commander of the 6th Infantry Division (6ID) and Joint Task Force Central, explained that the military had to use force due to the refusal of the BIFF-KF leaders to return to the folds of the law and lay down their arms. He stated that the primary duty of the military is to protect the citizens from the violence inflicted by terrorist groups.

“Mas nangingibabaw ang tungkulin ng inyong kasundaluhan na proteksyonan ang ating mamamayan laban sa paghahasik ng karahasan ng mga teroristang grupo, bagay na napilitan tayo na gamitan ng pwersa ang mga ito upang tuluyang matuldukan ang terorismo dito sa ating lugar,” Rillera said.

Commending the Troops

Rillera also commended the troops for their bravery and sacrifice. Seven soldiers were injured during the operation, but the military considers this a significant victory in their efforts to eradicate the threat posed by the BIFF-KF.

“Aking binabati ang ating mga tropa sa 1BCT at iba pang mga operating units, bagaman at may pito tayong mga kasundaluhan na nasugatan sa labang ito, ating kinikilala ang kanilang kabayanihan sa pagtatanggol sa bayan. Isang napakalaking tagumpay ang ating nagawa sa pagbura ng BIFF-KF sa hanay ng mga teroristang pangkat,” Rillera added.

The military operation demonstrates the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region and its resolve to eliminate terrorist threats to protect the people of Maguindanao del Sur and surrounding areas. Further investigations and operations may follow as authorities work to ensure the region’s stability and safety.
