Fire Scorches Eight Hectares in Zamboanga City


A blaze ravaged approximately eight hectares of grassland in Barangay Tugbungan, Zamboanga City, on Thursday, March 21, 2024. Here are some details from the report of GMA Regional TV News.

According to investigators, the flame ignited around noon and raged for seven hours before finally being extinguished. Although some children were found burning garbage in the area, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, but authorities deemed it the largest grass fire in the city this year.

“Mangayo mi’g tabang sa katawhan nga dili na gayod ta magsunog-sunog og basura bisan sa balay,” appealed Zamboanga City Fire District Marshall, Fire Superintendent Christopher Morales. [Translation: “We ask the people not to burn garbage anymore, even at home,” urged Zamboanga City Fire District Marshall, Fire Superintendent Christopher Morales.]

House Blaze Claims Young Woman’s Life in Zamboanga del Sur

Meanwhile, tragedy struck in Barangay Malubo, Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur. A 23-year-old woman lost her life in a house flame. The victim was trapped inside her home engulfed in flames. She was unable to be rescued as the blaze rapidly spread through the lightweight structure. Alone at the time of the incident, the victim suffered fatal burns. The estimated damage to the property was valued at P20,000.

Authorities are diligently investigating the cause of the flame. They are urging the public to exercise extra caution during the prevailing hot weather conditions.
