Cagayan de Oro City witnessed a massive gathering of nearly 20,000 devotees for the annual Traslacion procession, drawing participants from across Mindanao and Visayas. This significant religious event, reported by Mindanao Daily News, aligns with similar processions held simultaneously in Manila and Davao on Tuesday, January 9.

For safety measures, telecommunications in the city were temporarily jam, affecting both phone calls and internet connections. Additionally, police personnel were strategically deploy along the route of the Nazarene procession to ensure the safety and orderliness of the event.

Archbishop Jose Cabantan of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro extended an invitation to the faithful, encouraging them to join the procession and reflect on their deep devotion to Poong Hesus Nazareno. In a message broadcasted on Radio Veritas, Archbishop Cabantan expressed gratitude for the blessings received. Particularly the birth of Jesus Christ. He emphasized Jesus’ role as a steadfast companion in life’s journey, offering comfort and hope even in adversity.

The significance of the procession was further underscored by the presence of a pilgrim image of Poong Hesus Nazareno. Bestowed upon the Archdiocese by the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of the Black Nazarene (Quiapo Church) on January 5, 2009. This image, which marks the beginning of the Black Nazarene procession in Northern Mindanao, brought to the Saint Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral.

Archbishop Cabantan reflected on the procession as a ‘Walk of Faith,’ mirroring the event held by Quiapo Church in the previous year. The 2023 Traslacion in Cagayan de Oro saw about 10,000 devotees. And this year’s increased turnout signifies the growing devotion and faith among the community. The Archbishop’s message of hope and companionship in faith. Particularly during life’s trials, resonates deeply with the devotees as they celebrate the Feast Day of Jesus Nazareno.
