3 Ex-Policemen Among Persons of Interest in Beauty Queen and Fiancé’s Murder

Geneva Lopez

Three out of seven persons of interest in the killing of beauty queen Geneva Lopez and her Israeli fiancé Yitzhak Cohen are former policemen, the Philippine National Police (PNP) disclosed on Monday. Here are some details according to the report of ABS-CBN News.

Dismissed Officers Implicated

“Dismissed na po yung tatlong pulis natin… Isa sa Angeles at dalawa sa NCRPO (National Capital Region Police Office). They were dismissed in late 2019, 2018, sa records po natin,” stated PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil. The dismissed officers, one from Angeles and two from the NCRPO, had been relieved of their duties in late 2019 and 2018.

Geneva Lopez, 27, and Yitzhak Cohen, 37, were reported missing on June 21 after meeting a middleman to inspect a piece of land they were interested in buying in Tarlac. Their remains were discovered at a remote quarry site over the weekend, both having suffered gunshot wounds. The couple was last seen riding an SUV, which was later found burned and abandoned in Capas on June 22.

Investigation Developments

Investigators believe they have gathered “enough evidence” against the seven individuals linked to the crime. Gen. Marbil mentioned that one of the suspects admitted to being involved in burying the couple, though he denied participation in the killings.

“Based doon sa evidence namin, based sa testimony niya, he was not part noong pagpatay. But he was part doon po sa paglibing po ng mga tao,” Marbil clarified.

Furthermore, Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos emphasized the commitment of authorities to bring the culprits to justice. He stated that they “will not rest until those responsible are held accountable.” The investigation continues as authorities work to unravel the full extent of the involvement of the seven persons of interest.
